Top SA dancer invited to the USA as part of the South Africa Freedom Month Commemorations.

Two time world dance champion and City of Tshwane Brand Ambassador, Paul Modjadji will be jetting off to the USA this week to join a series of celebrations in honor of South Africa’s Freedom Month commemoration.

Modjadji, popularly known for his stint on soapie Backstage and choreographing SA’s first dance film Hear Me Move, is an award winning dancer and choreographer who’s work has cemented him as an ambassador of dance and youth excellence for South Africa. Last year President Barack Obama honored Modjadji with a Mandela Washington Young African Leaders Award, while the South African Institute for Advancement awarded him with an Inyathelo Philanthropy award in the same year (for his efforts towards the promotion and empowerment of the youth using the arts).

As part of his week long official visit to the US, Modjadji will kick off his engagements with a performance at the biggest South African gathering in the USA, the South African Freedom Day picnic celebrations, in Washington DC, an event that has been running for over 20 years, and sees scores of Africans and South Africans living in the diaspora converge to celebrate South Africa’s freedom and democracy.

Modjadji will also use the time to attend screenings of Hear Me Move, ahead of its US release date in October, and attend to schools speaking engagements to speak about South Africa and her young democracy amongst some of his assignations.

Speaking from his office in the Capital City, Tshwane, Modjadji said “Our beautiful country has achieved great strides for a democracy as young as ours. We have a lot to be proud of and as we endeavor to celebrate our newfound freedom we must not forget our history and all the lessons and leaders who have brought us this far. Our role is to go out there into the world and continue to carry forth the spirit of Global African Excellence.”

Speaking of Modjadji’s invitation, Margaret Perekisi, Chairperson of the South African Freedom day Committee said “We are honored to be joined by Paul Modjadji at this year’s festivities. He’s caliber of work and contribution to the arts landscape in the international community is one South Africa should be proud of.”
