Resumption of Waste Management Services
07 September 2020
The City of Tshwane is pleased to inform its customers about the resumption of waste collection service operations today after services were interrupted last week due to the expiry of the vehicle leasing contract.
The waste management operations of the City were negatively affected following the expiry of the CSS46 tender on Monday, 31 August 2020, which was used for the leasing of vehicles that are crucial to the provision of day-to-day service delivery.
Normal waste collection schedule effectively resumed today, Monday, 07 September 2020. This means that residents who used to get collection on a Monday must ensure that all bins are placed outside their residence today for collection later in the afternoon. The City demonstrated its commitment to clear the backlog over the weekend in certain areas by utilising internal staff.
The City is currently in the process of concluding the supply chain management process to award the replacement tender for the leasing of vehicles, yellow plant, equipment and machinery. A process of advertising the replacement tender started in August 2019, however, owing to a series of challenges with respect to the bid specifications, the tender had to be re-advertised no less than three times.
Furthermore, delays were encountered due to the COVID-19 lockdown regulations, including having had a member of the evaluation team who tested positive for the Corona virus. All these, cumulatively, impacted the timelines and ability to finish the evaluation and adjudication on time. It is anticipated that the award of the new tender will be concluded within the next three weeks.
As the City’s Waste Management Division continues to render waste collection services, thousands of bins are handled daily by waste collectors, although they may be provided with protective gloves for their personal protection, possible cross contamination is inevitable.
Cross contamination during handling may occur from one bin to the other, therefore residents are urged to take precautionary measures and disinfect their wheelie bins after collection. In addition, residents are reminded to remember to wash their hands with soap and water or hand sanitise after handling the bin.
The City wishes to profusely apologise to its customers for the inconvenience caused.
