Protests results in suspension of Tshwane bus operations
3 September 2019
Subsequent to days of spontaneous protests in and around the Pretoria Central Business District (CBD), the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Councillor (Cllr) Sheila Senkubuge has directed immediate suspension of both the Tshwane Bus Service (TBS) and A Re Yeng operations effectively.
“In light of the unpredictable and unsafe atmosphere, I have resolved to withdraw the buses in the interest of safeguarding the municipal assets, bus drivers and most importantly commuters,” remarked Cllr Senkubuge.
A Re Yeng buses operating along the Mamelodi route will remain running for as long as there are no threats or disruptions. “The current environment on this lane remains conducive to render Tshwane Rapid Transport (TRT) services to our commuters, especially during peak hours,” said Cllr Senkubuge.
Meanwhile, the MMC has structured a meeting with the leadership of the Taxi Industry within Tshwane metropolitan municipality. The discussions, arranged for this afternoon, will be centered on ensuring a safer climate for public transportation. “These discussions will enable the City and the taxi leadership to map a way forward towards restoring smooth relations that have been enjoyed by all public transport stakeholders in the Capital City,” added Senkubuge.
