PhilosophyCafe Meeting Friday 9 September: Theme: Consumer Exploitation: Subtle Unethical Behavior
The next FilisofieKafee (PhylosophyCafe) meeting at Cafe Riche, the home for innovative thinking, takes place on Friday 9 September and Leon van Vuuren, a leading authority in the field of ethics, will begin the conversation where after the theme will be debated.
Although his presentation is in Afrikaans, questions or contributions to the discussion can be made in English. It is not a lecture and it takes place in a bistro atmosphere. Guests can therefore eat in between and from 18:00 they can already indulge in a choice of three exquisite dishes.
Judging by news reports one cannot be blamed for having a perception that service delivery in South Africa does not appear to be a priority, and inevitably in a society that has been battered by daily news reports of corruption, the public seem to be a soft target for devious traders who are out to milk more profits from the consumer.
The theme is thus very topical as it impacts on the practical hustle and bustle of individuals and therefore it promises to stimulate lively contributions to the debate and to bring out the best from the philosophers among us.
There will be professional security guards on hand at the parking outside.
Leon is the Executive Director: Professional and Business Ethics at the Ethics Institute. He holds a doctoral degree in Industrial Psychology and during 2000 he completed a course in Managing Ethics in Organisations presented by the Centre for Business Ethics at the Graduate School of Business at Bentley University in America.
He is currently the convenor of a multi-stakeholder task team responsible for a total revision of the regulations and codes that govern professional ethics in psychology in South Africa. Leon has published numerous articles in international and national scholarly journals, is co-author of Business Ethics (5th ed., 2014) and is the founding editor of the African Journal of Business Ethics. During 2013 he was awarded honorary life membership of Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa (SIOPSA) for his contribution to this discipline and profession.
His areas of specialisation include consultation, training and research in business and professional ethics. Insofar as consultation (advisory services) is concerned, he focuses specifically on ethical leadership training, the training of Boards on ethics matters, the strategic institutionalisation of business ethics, corporate ethical culture transformation and the implementation of a corporate ethics management function in business organisations. Leon also acts as an advisor on professional ethics to several professional associations.
