Michelle Crowned as Junior Super Chef
Hirsch’s Centurion recently hosted their annual Hirsch and Defy Junior Super Chef competition, aimed at giving children between the ages of 8 and 13 the opportunity to showcase their culinary skills.
Hirsch’s events co-ordinator, Warren Pearce hosted the event, and the excitement was palpable as the budding chefs, accompanied by parents, siblings, family and friends gathered in store. The ten contestants were given a mystery basket of ingredients, from which they had to prepare 2 dishes, one being a main and the other a starter or dessert, in a timeframe of 1 hour.
“I am amazed by the creativity and commitment of the children in preparing their dishes. It is great to see this kind of passion in ones so young” said one of the judges, Chef Nick van der Mescht, from the SA Chefs Training & Innovation Academy.
The overall winner for the evening, Michelle Jones aged 12, prepared a chicken schnitzel with a mushroom cream sauce and butternut mash followed by lemon cream cake. The decision from the judges was unanimous and an ecstatic Michelle received her prize of a Stick Blender from Defy. She goes forward to the take part in the Gauteng finals, which takes place in Fourways on the 17th of June.
