Inaugural City of Tshwane Council Meeting Postponed
The City of Tshwane’s Inaugural Council meeting which had initially been scheduled for Thursday, 18 November 2021, has been postponed to next week Tuesday, 23 November 2021.
The postponement comes after this morning’s consultations between the acting City Manager, Ms. Mmaseabata Mutlaneng, and members of political parties represented in the City of Tshwane Council, during which meeting the councilors requested time to finalize negotiations on a possible coalition government.
The 1 November 2021 local government elections did not produce the outright winner to govern Tshwane. Consequently, parties are frantically hard at work to cobble together a coalition government.
All the logistical arrangements are still in place to ensure the smooth running of the constitution of the new Council in the Capital City. Mutlaneng will preside over the swearing-in of the political office bearers – Councillors – and the election of the Speaker of Council, after which the Speaker will take over the reins and preside over the election of the Executive Mayor and the Chief Whip of Council. Acting Chief Magistrate Vusimuzi Mahlangu will oversee the swearing-in ceremony.
