City to close Onderstepoort landfill site
22 March 2019
The City of Tshwane’s residents are informed of the closure of the Onderstepoort landfill site on Rosslyn Road (R566) for domestic/household waste with effect from 31 March 2019. The municipality has taken a decision to close down the facility, which was legitimated in February 1992, after it was certified that it has reached its lifespan.
Post this anticipated closure, only garden refuse will be accepted until 31 December 2019 or until further notice. The garden refuse will be needed to rehabilitate the landfill site.
Landfills are usually designed with a specific life span, determined by the volume of waste that can be handled. Once filled to capacity, they must be closed and decommissioned as stipulated in the Waste Management legislation.
Members of the public are advised to utilise the Ga-Rankuwa, Soshanguve and Hatherley landfill sites as well as nearby private landfill sites which amongst other includes Bon Accord, Rosslyn and Mooiplaats as an alternative.
The City apologises for the inconvenience that will arise as a result of the closure of this essential facility.
