A Re Yeng and Tshwane Bus Services to increase fares
27 June 2019
The City of Tshwane will increase its bus fares by an average amount of R150 from 1 July 2019 for the 2019/20 financial year.
This increase will enable the City’s Roads and Transport Department to cover a portion of its operational costs for both services – A Re Yeng (Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN)) and Tshwane Bus Services.
“Our bus fares still remain relatively affordable. The maximum fare that will be charged is R23,50 which covers up to 71 km and the minimum fare will be R8,00, subject to discounts and concessions,” said Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Roads and Transport, Cllr Sheila-Lynn Senkubuge.
Typically, value-added tax, inflation and operational costs are some of the factors that has led to the price increases. Furthermore, the City will increase its merchants/ vendor commission rate from 0,66% (including VAT) to between 5% and 7% (including VAT) in order to incentivise approved merchants to sell automated fair collection products to commuters.
“We will continue to provide concessions to passengers who have applied and qualify for such preferential allowances. For instance, the scholar fare that has been a flat fee of R7,00 since the launch of the Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) card system in 2015, will increase by R1,00 to R8,00. Persons living with disabilities and pensioners will continue to share the same concession rate as scholars,” said MMC Senkubuge.
To qualify for the scholar concession, a person must be in full-time education with a maximum age of 19 years (up to Grade 12). People living with disabilities and pensioners will have to make applications in order to qualify.
Passengers are also advised that connector packages are available at the A Re Yeng Stations and Customer Care Centres, Tshwane Bus Services selling points, ABSA cash-accepting ATMs, Automated Fare Collection (AFC) mobile kiosk(s) and other approved selected selling points.
