16 Days of Activism – No Violence against Women and Children
City of Tshwane to Launch its 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign
22 November 2017
For the 19th year, South Africa is taking part in the global 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign, which runs from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) through to International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
The leadership and employees of the City will join millions around the world in marking the universal 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign from 25 November to 10 December 2017.
The 16 Days of Activism Campaign is but one element of Government’s year-long integrated and cross-sectoral drive to address women and children abuse by generating an increased awareness of the negative impact of violence on women and children. It also aims at contributing to government’s primary developmental objective of restoring human dignity within the context of safer and more secure communities.
The Campaign is signified by a white ribbon and all members of the public are required to show their support to the campaign by wearing the ribbon during the period of the campaign to demonstrate their support for a society that rejects violence against women and children.
The following are the objectives of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign:
- Attract all City of Tshwane residents to be active participants in the fight to eradicate violence against women and children, hence the theme: Count me in.
- Ensure mass mobilization of all communities to promote collective responsibility in the fight to eradicate violence against women and children.
- Encourage the community to acknowledge that violence against women and children is NOT a government or criminal justice system problem, but a societal problem and that failure to view it as such results in all efforts failing to eradicate this scourge in our communities.
The theme for this year’s Campaign is: “Be counted, STOP Women and Children Abuse.”
One of the critical success factors of this campaign is how various stakeholders, corporates and public institutions communicates key messages of the campaign and thus mobilizes the participation of their employees, leadership, members and others.
The City in partnership with the civil society, the Commission on Gender equality and the Gauteng Provincial Department Community Safety will launch the campaign on 23 November 2017.
The launch will be in the form of an unveiling of supersized White Ribbon at the City Hall as part of the City’s commitment to ensuring the safety of women and children and an announcement of the City’s activities during the campaign.
The campaign will continue with a giant panting (Ribbon) on the grass grounds of the Tshwane House Open Park by staff and the City Manager on Friday 24 November 2017. The painting will be renewed by employees on their spare time ( lunch /coffee/ body stretch) for the duration of the campaign
Members of the Media are invited to attend the campaign Launch on Thursday, 23 November 2017, at the Fountains Circles from 07h00 – 08h00. The launch is a unique photo opportunity and for media to interview members of the public and City officials on the campaign against women and children abuse
