New COVID hot-spots in SA – Gauteng ‘no longer the epicentre
Here’s how the COVID-19 epicentre has shifted over the past few days, creating a list of new hot-spots outside of Gauteng Province.
The latest COVID-19 data shows that the hot-spots in South Africa are beginning to migrate out of Gauteng, and are now springing up in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Provincial Premier Sihle Zikalala confirmed that the region has replaced Gauteng as the national epicentre for disease, and Health Minister Zweli Mkhize is also wary.

In the past eight days, KZN has seen its COVID-19 cases increase by 50%. It is recording some of the highest daily infections rates of anywhere in Mzansi, and only Gauteng has more active cases to report:
- Fatalities: 614
- Total cases: 64 061
- Still active: 42 196
- Last daily increase in positive tests: 3 529
- Percentage of active cases in SA: 24.3%
Updated: The COVID-19 hot-spots of South Africa
In data published earlier on Monday, a total of 17 recognised municipalities – both local and district – were identified as troublesome by the health department. The worst affected sub-districts have also been listed, as KwaZulu-Natal is now staring directly at the peak of its COVID-19 battle.
This, however, does not mean the suburbs of Gauteng have managed to rid themselves of the disease. Hot-spots in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Pretoria still require and intense national focus.
