Load shedding status: 13 December 2019
Eskom will shift load shedding to stage 1 from 23:00 on Thursday night to 9:00 on Friday morning.
The power utility will implement stage 2 load shedding from 9:00 until 23:00 on Friday, Eskom said in a statement issued on its Twitter account on Thursday evening.
Please note that load shedding will commence when the instruction to shed load is received from Eskom. This means that load shedding starts with the group/s that is/are earmarked on the schedule at that specific time and day of the month.
However, load shedding can take place at any time within a given time slot, and will not necessarily start on the exact time as indicated on the schedule. Different suburbs within a group can be affected, depending on the load the City is required to shed.
NRS 048 stipulates that load shedding can be implemented as stages 1 to 4 as well as under extreme contingency conditions, from stages 5 to 8. Stages are cumulative.
A higher stage will include all groups in lesser stages for a specific time slot.
i.e. Stage 4 will consist of all the groups in Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 as well as the group for Stage 4.
The current load shedding groups are not fixed and merely indicate the areas grouped together in order to facilitate load shedding across Tshwane so as to minimize the impact on consumers. These groups might however change at any time, depending on the state of the electricity network infrastructure and in line with the guidelines stipulated in Nersa’s regulations (NRS048-9:2016)
Important information:
Every stage includes the stages before them as well, i.e. stage 4 includes stages 1, 2,3 and 4.
Stage 1 requires 1000MW,
Stage 2 requires 2000MW,
Stage 3 requires 3000MW,
and Stage 4 calls for 4000MW to be rotationally loadshed nationally at a given period. Load Shedding is conducted rotationally as a measure of last resort to protect the power system.
Eskom continues to appeal to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during this period. Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electrical appliances to assist in reducing demand.
