Hammanskraal Residents Celebrate Access to Clean Water
The residents of Hammanskraal are finally experiencing a long-awaited milestone as clean, safe drinking water flows from their taps. The first phase of the region’s water supply project has been completed, delivering 12.5 megalitres of treated water daily to the community.
This achievement was announced on Wednesday, January 8, by Tshwane Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya, who addressed the community about the improved access to potable water.
A Resolution to Decades of Struggle
For nearly 20 years, Hammanskraal residents have endured unsafe and unreliable water supplies, resulting in significant health and quality-of-life challenges. However, as of 2025, this persistent issue has been addressed, marking a new chapter for the community.
The Tshwane metro confirmed that the water supplied from the Magalies Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant now meets strict health and safety standards, allowing residents to drink and use the water with confidence.
Comprehensive Efforts to Ensure Safety
Mayor Moya emphasized that rigorous testing was conducted to ensure the water adheres to required health benchmarks. The recent improvements stem from the first phase of a larger, R700-million water supply project aimed at resolving Hammanskraal’s long-standing water challenges.
This initial phase, completed on November 16 last year, included rehabilitating the aging pipeline network and purging the old reticulation system to eliminate contaminants. The goal was to establish a safe, disinfected, and reliable water distribution system for the community.
Future Plans
While the first phase now provides 12.5 megalitres of treated water daily, the project’s ultimate objective is to increase the treatment plant’s capacity to 50 megalitres per day. Achieving this milestone will further bolster water access and reliability for Hammanskraal and surrounding areas.
After years of struggle, Hammanskraal residents can finally celebrate this significant step forward, confident that clean water is now a part of their daily lives.
I had made a commitment that I would be the first to attest to the safety of the water in Hammanskraal. I have kept my promise. @CityTshwane pic.twitter.com/BRayCHJOTS
