City of Tshwane Warns Residents of Scam Threats
City of Tshwane Warns Residents of Scam Threats to Disconnect Power
The City of Tshwane has issued an urgent warning to residents regarding a scam involving individuals falsely claiming to be officials from the city’s revenue collection team. These scammers are calling customers, threatening to disconnect their power supply, and asserting that their accounts are in arrears.
Residents are advised not to engage with these perpetrators, as the City of Tshwane does not inform customers via phone calls that their accounts are overdue or that their power will be disconnected. The city’s revenue collection process involves technicians who may visit properties without prior notice to disconnect services for accounts in arrears.
If a customer receives a legitimate call from the city’s credit control, the official will provide clear identification, state the reason for the call, specify the property in question, mention the outstanding amount, and indicate the last payment date. Customers will then be instructed to make a payment at the nearest City of Tshwane Walk-in Customer Service Centre or arrange payment at municipal offices. Alternatively, payment details for the city’s bank account will be provided for direct transactions.
The City of Tshwane emphasizes that any attempts to extort money from residents will be met with strict legal action. Those found guilty of such fraudulent activities will face arrest, charges, and prosecution. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
