Chaos feared as more pupils return to school
Teachers’ union Naptosa says it’s concerned about possible chaos on the 6th of July. That’s when about 6 million pupils are expected back at school.
According to the Basic Education Department, the grades will be R, 1, 2, 3, 6, 10 and 11.
But Naptosa says due to a lack of communication, all these grades could arrive at schools at the same time, leading to chaos.
“On the 6th, we’re going to have this huge cohort of children arriving. There won’t be enough classes for them and there’s going to be a bit of chaos,” said Naptosa’s executive director, Basil Manuel.
A concerned mother in Pretoria says there has been very little communication from her Grade 12 daughter’s school after two pupils tested positive for COVID-19. 679 schools had to close in recent weeks because of COVID-19 cases.
Meanwhile, the Department of Basic Education says it’s all systems go for 6 July.
