Cancer Survivors Day
Join the CANSA Bannerthon and Support International Cancer Survivors Day
International Cancer Survivors’ Day is celebrated during the first week of June to acknowledge and celebrate the courageous individuals fighting cancer. The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is promoting the CANSA ‘Bannerthon’, 1 – 6 June 2018 by encouraging all workplaces and businesses to show ‘visual’ support and display a specially printed banner during in the first week of June.
Munnik Marais, CANSA’s Corporate Relations Manager says, “One in four South African’s are affected by cancer due to diagnosis of self, family, loved ones or friends. And this also includes many work colleagues. We spend a huge amount of time at work with colleagues and co-workers and many of them are cancer survivors. Corporate South Africa is also affected by cancer so this is a great way to recognise the brave fighters.”
This initiative, managed by Chapmar Industries, challenges all companies and corporates to purchase a 100 meter long 600mm wide plastic banner, that can be cut up into sections and displayed on perimeter fences, balconies and external and internal staircases for a week or more commencing on 1 June.
The colourful banner is printed with the slogan “Support the fight against cancer” and has a cancer ribbon in pink and blue to designate all cancers. Chapmar Industries also manage the large red ribbon plastic banners usually displayed in the first week of December, creating awareness for World AIDS day and raising funds for children affected by AIDS.
Nick Chapman from Chapmar Industries says, “Now all businesses can help create awareness and recognise cancer survivors by putting up a CANSA banner for International Cancer Survivors’ Day. And how about challenging another three companies in your location to do the same. In this way you can be the inspiring force in your area. Imagine every company with a CANSA banner on their perimeter fence.”
A percentage of each banner sold to companies is donated to CANSA to help them fund their ongoing cancer risk-reduction research and to sustain the care and support programmes. Thanks to these efforts and the awareness campaigns for early detection, there are a growing amount of brave cancer survivors who need to be recognised.
