UP and TUT mulls fees commission report
Both the University of Pretoria (UP) and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) have yet to make any decisions on whether they will be scrapping registration and application fees, or implement any other recommendations made in a report released yesterday.
This is after President Jacob Zuma released the report by the Heher commission, which looked into the possibility of free tertiary education.
“The university council and its executive did not have any control over national policy on funding for universities,” said UP spokesperson Rikus Delport.
“The fees issue is a national problem which requires a national policy decision,” he said.
“The university would continue to work with all parties to find ways of making education more accessible.”
The Heher commission’s report said that the state had “no capacity” to provide free tertiary education. It did however make several recommendations on how to alleviate students’ financial burdens.
