The metro recently issued a statement commending the efforts of local law enforcement.

The Tshwane metro police (TMPD) has had a successful run in locking up drug dealers recently and as a result, kept drugs worth R700 000 off the streets.

The arrests come as a result of a collaboration between the TMPD and SAPS crime intelligence, the first of which came about on November 23 when authorities arrested nine suspects in possession of Khat valued at R2 000 in Pretoria West. The plant is common in parts of eastern and Southern Africa, and chewing on it gives the user a euphoric feeling. Two of the nine arrests were Somalians.

Four Tanzanians were arrested for possession of and dealing drugs in Pretoria West the following night on November 24.

“Further investigations led to the arrest of three Tanzanian females, who are related to the four suspects. They were all dealing in drugs (nyaope) in Atteridgeville, Hercules and Wonderboompoort,” said Tshwane mayor Randall Williams.

The metro recently issued a statement commending the efforts of local law enforcement.

“The drugs confiscated had an estimated street value of close to R500 000,” Williams continued.

Two Nigerians were arrested in Mamelodi for dealing in and possession of drugs in a third separate success.

Police recovered 380 packets of nyaope when they arrested the suspects.

The suspects are expected to appear in court in due course.

“I want to thank our TMPD officers for doing a brilliant job in protecting our communities and young people from drugs.

In recent weeks, the TMPD has made several major drug busts and should be commended by all for their work,” Williams concluded.

“Overall, a total of 11 drug dealers who are foreign nationals were arrested and removed from the streets during the three operations.”
