Presidency confirms today is a public holiday
Pretoria, 27 December 2016
President Jacob Zuma has reassured South Africans that Tuesday is still a public holiday.
The Presidency on Monday issued a statement claiming it’s been receiving a lot of enquiries into 27 December and whether it really is a holiday.
Earlier this year, Zuma had declared Tuesday a public holiday as Christmas Day would fall on a Sunday, which meant South Africa would not comply with the minimum number of public holidays, as set out in the Public Holidays Act of 1994.
Presidency spokesperson Bongani Nqulunga said, “The decision occasioned by the fact that our workers in the country would only have 11 public holidays instead of 12, due to the fact that 25 December fell on a Sunday.”
