Hard work and dedication pays off for Mamelodi IkamvaYouth
Mamelodi IkamvaYouth bags 25 Bachelor Passes, 24 Distinctions and a 91% pass rate.
Pretoria – Hard work and dedication paid off for the Mamelodi IkamvaYouth students as the branch surpassed the previous year’s results by achieving 25 Bachelor Passes, 24 Distinctions and a 91% pass rate, which is the highest academic achievement amongst all the other branches in South Africa.
Learners from the Mamelodi IkamvaYouth Centre, assembled over the weekend to be honoured by the community and various corporates for their outstanding 2018 results. IkamvaYouth is a by-youth-for-youth South African organisation that equips learners with knowledge, skills, networks and resources to access tertiary education and/or employment opportunities upon matriculation. IkamvaYouth’s programme has to date impacted over 5000 youth beneficiaries since the programme started in 2003. To date over 200 matriculates have successfully exited the doors of the Mamelodi branch.
The celebratory occasion was filled with excitement and positivity with various leaders, tutors and alumni’s sharing a few words of encouragement to the learners that were in attendance. Lungile Zakwe, Executive Director for IkamvaYouth was also in attendance, further emphasising the importance and power of education and its ability to change lives.
“I’m so proud of the class of 2018. You have put in the work and now we see the results. To our valued strategic partners and sponsors, we are so grateful for you. We continue to do this together. We thank you for all that you do, it means a lot to everyone”, said Zakwe.
Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) has been a valued partner since 2011 and has made a difference to 4142 learner’s lives. CCBSA believes in ploughing back to the communities in which it operates in. The business has been supporting the centre through monetary investments and also taking time out to mentor learners, ensuring that they are ready and confident to take on the matric year.
“What the class of 2018 has done is phenomenal, this is the first time that we have seen such remarkable results. This class has made it easier for us as a corporate to continue to invest in IkamvaYouth and we hope that the standard increases year on year”, says Unathi Mbanya, CSI Specialists for CCBSA.
Kamogelo Maripane (18) received as special recognition for being the top performing student, walking away with 4 distinctions. Her journey with IkamvaYouth started in 2015 where she was looking for a way to improve her results. She will be studying a Bachelor of Sciences at one of the top universities in South Africa and attributes her success to the support provided at the centre.
CCBSA is passionate about Youth Development and milestones such as those achieved in Mamelodi are a valuable demonstration of a working partnership between corporates and communities.
