Amazing talent discovered at Nkomo Village Art Workshop
The Landlord of Nkomo Village Shopping Centre, Safari Investments, is passionate about local creative talent in Atteridgeville. They want to establish Nkomo Village in Atteridgeville as a centre where schools and the local community can exhibit art, choir performances, and other creative talents.
To kick-start this initiative Safari Investments launched an arts competition to encourage and assist local artists. Art works in three categories were entered and thirty entrants (ten per category) were selected to attend a workshop at Nkomo Village on Saturday, 12 October 2019. Marina Wibraham, a Johannesburg based artist, presented the workshop for the 16 year and older finalists. She gave an interesting lecture about colour and demonstrated how to work with watercolour. Neo Leballo, a local artist, worked with the 12 to 15 year olds and demonstrated how to use Jik and ink as an efficient and affordable art medium. Amazing talent and creative skills were discovered among the students who were given opportunity to create their own works on the day.
Two of the representatives of the AttSaul Arts and Culture Forum also attended the workshop showing their support of the initiative while the day was made special by the presence of Titus Matiyane, a well-known international artist based in Atteridgeville. Safari Investments sponsored art supplies for the workshop while tenant of Nkomo Village, Builders Warehouse, contributed the hard board materials and tenants Boxer and Steers supplied refreshments and burgers.
The next phase of the competition will be running until the 22nd of November and winners will be announced during the Nkomo Birthday festivities on the 7th of December 2019. Art works will be exhibited at Nkomo Village during the weekend of 6 to 7 December 2019.
Safari Investments believes this to be only the first of many opportunities of teaching art and developing talent within the creative Atteridgeville community in and around Nkomo Village.
