Where the Metro keeps Failing Residents are getting FedUp

After nearly a year of inaction from the metro, residents of Clarina — led by Ward 98 councillor Mickey van der Westhuizen — took it upon themselves to repair the area’s pothole-ridden roads. Despite repeated reports and escalations, the metro failed to respond, prompting the community to source their own materials and equipment with help from sponsors like National Asphalt and AfriForum. Despite these efforts, he confirmed there was no support or feedback from the metro.
While residents praised Van der Westhuizen’s leadership and the success of the initiative, he emphasized that such repairs are the municipality’s responsibility.
He also called for greater accountability and better resourcing of road maintenance teams in Region 1, criticising the current administration for its lack of practical engagement.
It is not the responsibility of residents to source, fix, and maintain the road infrastructure within the bounds of their residence; the City of Tshwane needs to act and deliver the services, as it is within the Municipality’s responsibility to do so.
