Transforming Lives Through Training and Community Outreach
The CSIR International Convention Centre (CSIR ICC) has consistently demonstrated its dedication to uplifting communities through impactful outreach initiatives.
Since 2001, the CSIR ICC has been a key player in fostering talent by offering annual in-service training opportunities to students pursuing diplomas in food and beverage, hospitality management, and related fields. This year, the centre welcomed six students from Tshwane South TVET College as part of its Visiting Students Programme. These students, who recently completed their studies in tourism, are currently engaged in an eight-month work-integrated learning placement at the CSIR ICC.
During their time at the centre, the students are immersed in various departments, gaining invaluable experience that bridges classroom theory with practical application. This hands-on exposure not only enhances their understanding of day-to-day operations but also highlights how their efforts contribute to broader organisational goals.
“I’m learning about the operational aspects of an accommodation establishment, including housekeeping, gardening, and building maintenance. Customer reviews clearly show that Entabeni Accommodation is highly regarded,” shared Lebogang Leso, one of the participating students.
Beyond education, the CSIR ICC extends its support to local communities in meaningful ways. Recently, the centre donated essential kitchen appliances, outdoor furniture, banqueting serveware, and other items to the Eersterust Welfare Organisation for the Aged. Located in Pretoria, this organisation provides safe housing and care for the elderly, disabled, and homeless, making these contributions invaluable to their mission.
The CSIR ICC remains steadfast in its commitment to community development by sharing resources and opportunities. It also calls on other hospitality establishments to embrace community involvement programmes to help build a skilled and employable workforce for the future.
