What’s Behind the Price Drop?
The primary driver of the fuel price cuts is the drop in global oil prices during April. Brent Crude fell from a high of $74.95 per barrel on 2 April to a low of $62.13 per barrel by 1 May, due to weak global demand, rising tariff tensions, and an unexpected production increase from OPEC+.
This resulted in an over-recovery in fuel prices of:
-
71 cents per litre for petrol
-
51 cents per litre for diesel
However, these gains were partially offset by a weaker rand. The average exchange rate for the review period (28 March to 1 May) was R18.8382/US$, compared to R18.2957/US$ previously. The depreciation contributed to an under-recovery of:
-
29.13 cents per litre for petrol
-
30.34 cents per litre for diesel
Despite these factors, the Slate Levy remains unchanged at 0.00 cents per litre, ensuring that the full benefit of lower oil prices is passed on to consumers.
