Tertiary Education in Pretoria

The City of Tshwane is home to many universities and colleges and has a buzzing student scene.

Pretoria has a high density of students and student accommodation, especially in the areas and neighbourhoods surrounding the universities and colleges.

University of Pretoria (commonly referred to as UP, Tuks, or Tukkies)

A multi-campus research university with approximately 39,000 students.

Established in 1920, the university is organised into nine faculties and a business school.

The university’s main campus and central administration offices are situated in Hatfield. The main campus is served by the Hatfield Gautrain station, and there is university bus shuttle services that operates between it’s different campuses and sports grounds.

University of South Africa (commonly referred to as Unisa)

The largest university on the African continent, this dedicated open distance education institution has approximately 300 000 students, including African and international students in 130 countries worldwide.

Pretoria houses two of Unisa’s campuses, the Muckleneuk Campus and the Sunnyside campus, the main area of student activity.

In 2010, Unisa was ranked as the 8th best university in South Africa and 1290th in the world.

Tshwane University of Technology

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) came into being through a merger of three technikons; the Technikon Northern Gauteng, Technikon North-West and Technikon Pretoria.

Catering for approximately 60,000 students, the University has become the largest residential higher education institution in South Africa.

There are over six campuses under the name of Tshwane University of Technology, only two of them actually located in Pretoria- one in Arcadia and one in Soshanguve.
