Struben Dam

Struben Dam is situated in the middle of Pretoria east in the suburb of Menlyn. A stone’s throw from Menlyn mall.

The dam is an ideal location for bird lovers because it attracts many water bird species.

Fish species include:

  • banded tilapia
  • sharptooth catfish
  • canary kurper
  • carp and bass

The sanctuary contains the Bankenveld vegetation type and the flora include Celtis africana, Acacia caffra and Acacia karoo.

Limited fishing spots are available on the south-eastern banks on a first come, first served basis (catch and release only).

Rules and regulations 

  • Groups bigger than 10 must make a booking.
  • No loud noises allowed.
  • No alcohol and drugs allowed.
  • No drones allowed.
  • No braais are allowed.
  • No gazebos are allowed.
  • No littering is allowed.

Struben Dam offers the following activities and facilities: 

  • Hiking
  • Circular route (1,8 km)
  • Dogs on leashes are allowed
  • Birdwatching
  • Picnic (no braais are allowed; only picnic baskets)
  • Fishing
  • Limited casual fishing spots are available on the south-eastern banks on a first come, first served basis (catch and release only)
  • Ablution facilities available

Gate times: 06:00 to 18:00 (winter and summer)

Entrance to the bird sanctuary will only be allowed until one hour before closing time.
