From Japan to URC Success with the Vodacom Bulls
Ruan Vermaak credits former Springbok lock Johan Ackermann for helping revitalize his career, leading to his success with the Vodacom Bulls after a stint in Japan. DYLAN JACK reports.
In his second season at Loftus Versfeld, Vermaak has solidified his role as a key enforcer under Jake White in the Vodacom URC. The 26-year-old has started all 11 of his appearances this season, contributing significantly to the fourth-placed Bulls’ strong position in the URC playoff race.
Last season, Vermaak made 19 appearances for the Bulls, forming a formidable second-row partnership with co-captain and lineout leader Ruan Nortje. Despite his current success, Vermaak’s journey has been challenging. After his professional debut with the Lions, he moved to Japan in 2020.
This move proved to be transformative for the young lock, who benefited greatly from the mentorship of Ackermann at the Red Hurricanes.
“It wasn’t just about rugby; personal factors also influenced my decision to go to Japan,” Vermaak explained. “Working with Johan Ackermann, a former Springbok lock, taught me invaluable lessons that I’ve integrated into my game back in South Africa.”
“The experience of playing under Ackermann was immense for me. His coaching had a profound impact on my development.”
Reflecting on his time in Japan, Vermaak expressed gratitude. “Playing in multiple competitions at a young age is something special. I’m privileged and thankful for those two years in Japan. They were incredibly beneficial.”
After a narrow victory against league leaders Glasgow Warriors, the Bulls are set to host Benetton in the penultimate round of the URC. The Italian team, eyeing a playoff spot after a surprising win over the Sharks in Durban, poses a significant challenge.
“We anticipate a tough match against Benetton,” Vermaak said. “Our goal is to secure maximum points from these next two games before the knockout stages. We’re focused on this weekend’s game, taking it one match at a time.”
“There’s no undue pressure; our focus is on performing well this weekend. We expect a physical game from Benetton. They have resilience and flair, as demonstrated last weekend. They play a full 80 minutes and keep pressing, so we need to be prepared for a challenging match.”
