Absa RYC TSHWANE 10K Launch

Tshwane, South Africa – Stillwater Sports, the organizer of South Africa’s renowned road running series, is thrilled to announce the inclusion of Tshwane as the newest destination in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. The eagerly anticipated Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K will debut on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

In 2023, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series features five groundbreaking events that go beyond traditional road races. This premium series has redefined mass participation by encouraging not only elite runners but also walkers, lifestyle enthusiasts, friends, and families from both local and international backgrounds to come together and partake in the most immersive road running experiences in the country.

Speaking at the official launch function of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K, held at the Premier Hotel in Pretoria on June 21, Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, expressed pride in bringing the excitement of the series to Tshwane. He extended heartfelt gratitude to the City of Tshwane and Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) for their invaluable support in making this event a reality. Meyer emphasized that Tshwane possesses the necessary qualities to host a world-class 10km road run, and with its exceptional infrastructure, cultural heritage, and warm hospitality, the city provides the perfect backdrop for a memorable journey. AGN’s dedication to promoting athletics and fostering a thriving running community was also acknowledged.

The primary goal of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K is to create an unforgettable experience that goes beyond a traditional road run. Meyer emphasized that the event aims to inspire a passion for athletics, spark a culture of health and well-being, and attract participants from all backgrounds, ultimately fostering a lifelong love for running. The scenic routes and inclusive atmosphere of the event will showcase the beauty of Tshwane and provide a platform for athletes to compete at the highest level.

Jolene Grobler, Absa Regional Segment Head, Premium, expressed excitement about extending the series to Tshwane. She noted the interest generated among Absa colleagues, customers, and community members during the first Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in Gauteng the previous year. The expansion of the series to more cities, including Tshwane, aligns with Absa’s goal of promoting an active lifestyle, connecting with colleagues and customers, and making a meaningful impact in the communities where they operate. Through the Absa Force for Good initiative, Absa will donate R1 for every kilometer run or walked by Team Absa Walk Run members on Strava towards a worthy cause in the community of Tshwane.

Hendrick Mokganyetsi, President of Athletics Gauteng North, expressed excitement about the partnership with Stillwater Sports in delivering a successful inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K. He highlighted the benefits to club members, provincial elite athletes, and grassroots sports development, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving success.

The Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K, scheduled for Sunday, August 27, 2023, will start and finish at the iconic Union Buildings, located on Government Avenue in Pretoria. Participants can choose to support three local charities—Reach for A Dream, Cotlands, and the Tshwane SPCA—when registering for the event online.

The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series has a remarkable combined prize purse of R 1,560,000.00 in 2023. Each of the five events will have R312,000.00 in prize money, with R252,000.00 allocated to the Open Category (R126,000.00 for the Top 10 Open Men’s and R126,000.00 for the Top 10 Open Women’s), and R60,000.00 dedicated to Age Categories (Junior, 40 – 49, 50 – 59, 60 – 69, and 70+).
