Firefighters Extinguish a Multistorey Building Fire at The Department of Correctional Services Head Office

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department swiftly responded to a fire incident at a multi-story building on Dr WF Nkomo Street, Pretoria, on the evening of 8 September 2024.

The fire was reported to the City of Tshwane Emergency Call Centre at 18:41. In response, the centre immediately deployed multiple firefighting units from the Central, Innesdale, Hatfield, and Philip Nel Park Fire Stations. The resources included three fire trucks, two ladders, a mobile command unit, a hose layer, and the district commander’s unit.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the blaze on the sixth floor and promptly initiated exterior firefighting by strategically positioning the ladders to prevent the fire from spreading further. Simultaneously, other teams prepared to enter the building to contain the fire to the affected floor and ensure a safe evacuation of all occupants.

Thanks to their swift efforts, the fire was contained to five offices, sparing the building from more extensive damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Proper Chimney Maintenance: If using a fireplace, have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually to prevent creosote buildup.
Dispose of Ashes Safely: Allow ashes to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container away from combustible materials.

Install Smoke Detectors: Place smoke detectors on every level and inside bedrooms. Test them monthly and replace batteries annually.
Maintain Electrical Systems: Ensure wiring, outlets, and appliances are in good condition. Avoid overloading circuits and follow appliance guidelines.
Safe Cooking Practices: Never leave cooking unattended and keep flammable materials away from the stove. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
Secure Candles: Use candles in sturdy holders and never leave them unattended. Consider flameless candles for added safety.
Store Flammable Materials Safely: Keep gasoline, propane, and other flammable materials in approved containers and away from heat sources.
Create a Fire Escape Plan: Develop and practice an evacuation plan with all household members. Ensure everyone knows how to exit quickly and safely.
Maintain Vegetation: Keep grass, bushes, and trees well-trimmed to reduce the risk of wildfire. Create a defensible space around your home.
Safe Burning Practices: Follow local regulations for burning leaves or debris. Never burn on windy days and have water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
Dispose of Barbecues Safely: Clean grills regularly and ensure they are fully extinguished and cool before disposing of ashes.
Use Fire Pits Responsibly: Position fire pits away from structures and overhanging branches. Never leave them unattended and fully extinguish before leaving.
