City of Tshwane Emergency Services Respond to Bus Accidents
CITY OF TSHWANE EMERGENCY SERVICES RESPOND TO BUS ACCIDENTS IN DE WAGENSDRIFT AND ANNLIN WEST
The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has recently responded to two separate bus accidents within a span of three days, underscoring the department’s swift action in mitigating road incident impacts and ensuring public safety.
Annlin West Incident – 2 February 2025
On the afternoon of Sunday, 2 February 2025, a mass-casualty bus accident occurred at the intersection of Lavender Road and Sefako Makgatho Drive in Annlin West, near Wonderboom in Pretoria North. The incident was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) at approximately 17:21. Firefighting resources from Wonderboom Fire Station and Central Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the scene, including a fire engine, a rapid intervention unit, a mobile command unit, a district commander’s unit, and a video unit.
Emergency medical care practitioners, alongside firefighters, treated a total of 81 patients on site. Of these, 77 patients were transported to various hospitals—including Tshwane District Hospital, Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, and Pretoria West District Hospital—with only two sustaining critical injuries. The remaining 17 patients, who experienced minor injuries, opted not to be transported. The Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Province Emergency Medical Services, the South African Police Service, and other role players also contributed to effective incident management. The road was temporarily closed during the rescue operations and the subsequent recovery of the bus. The cause of this accident is still under investigation.
De Wagensdrift Incident – 5 February 2025
On the morning of Wednesday, 5 February 2025, another bus accident was reported on Moloto Road (R573) in De Wagensdrift, near KwaMhlanga. This incident, which marked the second bus accident in three days, was reported to the ECC at about 07:10. Firefighting resources from Rayton Fire Station, Bronkhorstspruit Fire Station, and Silverton Fire Station were dispatched promptly, including a rapid intervention unit, two bush pumpers, and a district commander’s unit. Assistance was also provided by a team from Thembisile Hani Local Municipality Fire and Rescue Services.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that both drivers were in critical condition and received immediate treatment by emergency medical care practitioners. In total, 16 patients (including the two drivers) suffered injuries ranging from minor to critical. They were transported to KwaMhlanga Hospital, Netcare Montana Hospital, and Mamelodi Regional Hospital for further treatment and observation. The incident saw a coordinated response from the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Province Emergency Medical Services, Mpumalanga Province Emergency Medical Services, the South African Police Service, and several other role players. The road was temporarily closed to facilitate rescue operations and the recovery of both the bus and the heavy-duty truck, with oil and diesel spillages managed promptly to secure the roadway. The cause of this accident is yet to be determined.
