MEC Lebogang Maile to visit the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment
25 May 2020
Gauteng COGTA MEC Lebogang Maile, accompanied by the City of Tshwane Administrators, will undertake a site visit to the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) tomorrow to inspect the resumption of the long overdue construction of the facility.
The WWTP in the City of Tshwane (CoT) has severely deteriorated due to ageing infrastructure. This has resulted in operations and maintenance challenges at the plant. Further to this, remedial costs have also increased significantly over the years, and the gradual increase in the inflow from the main collection areas, as well as the bypass flows from the Daspoort and Zeekoegat WWTPs, has raised environmental concerns.
The CoT’s identified scope of work aims to improve the quality of treated effluent leaving the plant and to supplement the treatment capacity of the plant.
The media has regularly reported on the poor-quality treated effluent being discharged from the Rooiwal WWTW and the impact this has locally and in the downstream receiving environment. Project upgrades are aimed at improving the quality of the WWTP by refurbishing and upgrading selected modules. Future expansions will significantly resolve the effluent quality issues in the receiving environment.
A contractor was appointed in August 2019, with work expected to commence in March 2020, but the project was delayed by legal and administrative issues, as well as the global Coronavirus pandemic. The project was given the green light to resume construction after the lifting of lockdown Level 5 and we expect the contractor to work according to agreed programme and timelines. Construction work is expected to be completed within 24 months, which puts the completion date at 30 June 2022.
