Rowan Zerf’s Triumphant Return: An Epic Comeback
After a decade-long hiatus, Rowan Zerf, former lead guitarist and vocalist of the renowned Afrikaans boy band NRG, is poised to reclaim his place in the music world with the release of his highly anticipated single, “Net Hier Om Te Tan.”
Emerging from a self-imposed exile, the Pretoria Boy’s High alumnus is ready to redefine his career, driven by a renewed passion and a vision as clear as his melodies. Zerf’s musical journey, which once resonated with fans through the energetic beats of NRG, now takes a solo path that reflects his matured artistry and life experiences.
In a candid conversation with Rekord, Zerf revealed that his decade-long absence was a period of deep reflection and meticulous planning. “I’ve been out of the industry for 10 years now. I’m basically brand new,” he remarked. This time away allowed him to reconcile his dual personas: the free-spirited entertainer and the pragmatic business mind, both essential facets of his identity.
Reflecting on his days with NRG, Zerf acknowledged the camaraderie and shared responsibilities within the band. “It was easier being part of a group because there’s a lot of people to point fingers at when things go wrong,” he mused. However, the end of that chapter has led him to embrace his true self and the authentic expression of his music.
“Authenticity isn’t something you need to think about; it’s an autonomous thing. It’s about what you think of yourself at your core,” he explained. This philosophy permeates his new single and music video, which blend light-hearted, easy-listening vibes with a poignant critique of social media’s impact on personal identity and the culture of fear and conformity it fosters.
Inspiration struck Zerf during a visit to a Mexican restaurant in Menlyn, where he observed a woman engrossed in her cellphone, isolated despite being surrounded by people. This encounter underscored the pervasive disconnect in modern society, a theme he artistically explores in his music video. “Here’s this girl, she walks out onto the beach, very cute, she has her headphones in, she’s taking selfies, and she’s on her phone. There’s no way I can get her attention because she is just here to tan,” he recounted.
The underlying message of the song is a call to unplug from our devices and engage more deeply with the world around us, a sentiment that resonates deeply in today’s digital age. Zerf’s passion for live performances is a testament to this belief. “Live music is what sets me apart. I know it sounds arrogant, but I think it’s okay to celebrate your victories and what you have worked hard for,” he asserted.
Zerf firmly believes that the magic of live performances is irreplaceable, even by the most advanced technologies. “No one is going to go pay money to see a hologram on stage,” he declared. As the music industry recovers from the pandemic’s shadow, Zerf senses a renewed hunger for live events. “Post-Covid, it has taken a while for people to get out of their funk, but there is a hunger and a desire to get out to live events,” he observed.
With a clear plan and unwavering determination, Zerf envisions a transformative year ahead. “In a year from now, it is going to be a completely different situation,” he confidently stated.
Rowan Zerf’s return is not just a comeback; it’s a bold statement of resilience, creativity, and the timeless power of music to connect us all. As he steps back into the spotlight, fans old and new are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in his extraordinary journey.
