Rietvlei Nature Reserve

Activities and facilities:

Hiking (day and overnight)

  • Day hiking: 10 to 15 people for an approximate four-hour trail of ±14 km
  • Overnight hiking: six to eight people for ±21 km over three days (Friday to Sunday)
  • Game viewing
    Game drives with the reserve’s vehicles (day and night drives)
  • Day drives: two-hour drive with the reserve’s vehicle. You will be accompanied by a qualified guide and you may use the Tshukudu Lapa until 22:00
  • Night drives: two-hour drive from 18:00 to 20:00 with the reserve’s vehicle. You will be accompanied by a qualified guide and you may use the Tshukudu Lapa until 22:00 (10 to 20 people)
  • Self-drives

Birdwatching

  • Environmental education
  • Must be booked in advance
  • Only for children aged 7 to 17, day groups only, two-hour programme, 15 children per guide (10 to 60 children)
  • Picnic area

Marais Dam

  • Braai facilities are available
  • Picnic area must be vacated at 18:00 in summer and 17:00 in winter
  • No functions may be held at the picnic area

Big lapa

  • Use from 09:00 to 00:00 (50 to 200 guests)
  • Facilities include braai stands, a kitchen with a stove and a walk-in fridge, bathrooms, a bar area, a small stage, electricity supply and electrical points
  • We provide ten steel fold-up tables and firewood

Small lapa (Tshukudu)

  • Use from 09:00 to 00:00 (maximum of 50 people)
  • Facilities include braai stands, a washing-up area, bathrooms, and electricity supply with electrical points
  • We provide six metal fold-up tables and firewood

Lecture hall

  • Use from 08:00 to 16:00 (maximum of 60 people)
  • Audio-visual equipment is available

Rules and regulations

The Rietvlei Nature Reserve’s vehicle capacity is 100 vehicles per day, available on a first come, first served basis. Once the nature reserve’s vehicle capacity is reached, vehicles from outside the reserve can be allowed in when vehicles from inside leave the reserve.

Please note that you are not allowed to host any functions at the picnic spot. Therefore, the picnic spot is available on a first come, first served basis, and you may not pay upfront for the picnic area.

The speed limit is 30 km/hour. No speeding is allowed.
No driving under the influence.
No flying of drones.
No fishing or swimming.
No firearms allowed.
No pets allowed.
No loud music allowed.

Visiting hours

  • Summer (September to March): 05:30 to 19:00. The last visitors must enter before 16:00 and may remain in the reserve until 18:50 because the gate closes at 19:00.
  • Winter (April to August): 06:00 to 18:00. The last visitors must enter before 15:00 and may remain in the reserve until 17:50 because the gate closes at 18:00.
