Pretoria’s Purple Spectacle Where did they come from

Pretoria’s Purple Spectacle
Jacarandas typically burst into bloom from October through November each year, with their purple canopies peaking in late October, and for anyone driving the canopied streets of Pretoria, it’s a sight that never fails to mesmerize. The city transforms into a vivid sea of purple, a spectacle that is uniquely South African—or at least, unmatched in Gauteng.
Not Native, But Iconic
But there’s more to these iconic trees than their striking beauty. Surprisingly, jacarandas are not indigenous to South Africa. They were introduced from Brazil over a century ago, first arriving in Durban in the early 1800s, with Pretoria following in the 1880s. Some of the oldest trees still stand proudly in Sunnyside today, silent witnesses to the city’s history.
How Jacaranda City Was Born

When the Union Buildings were under construction in the early 1900s, Pretoria was also upgrading its infrastructure. Old trees had to make way for new sewerage systems. Rather than leaving the streets bare, the Pretoria Council gifted jacaranda saplings to residents, who planted them in gardens and along pavements. Soon, entire streets were awash in purple blooms, and Pretoria earned its enduring nickname: Jacaranda City.
The Blooming Phenomenon
Today, the city boasts roughly 65,000 mature jacarandas. Their flowering is sudden and spectacular—buds burst open on bare branches, creating the impression of an unexpected purple surprise. While these trees are synonymous with Pretoria’s identity, Johannesburg actually has even more jacarandas in its urban canopy.
Rare Finds in the City
For those seeking something rarer, white-flowering jacarandas can be found near Jan Cilliers Park and Wonderboom, adding an unusual twist to the familiar landscape.
Jacarandas on Campus
Even the University of Pretoria (UP) has embraced these resilient trees, with over 200 jacarandas thriving on campus. Some were transplanted during the Bus Rapid Transit project and continue to flourish. Jason Sampson, head of UP’s botanical gardens, notes that jacarandas are among the toughest and most enduring trees in the region.

A Living Celebration
Whether you’re strolling through a quiet street or driving down a bustling avenue, the jacaranda bloom is a reminder of Pretoria’s unique charm—and a celebration of nature’s ability to transform a cityscape.
