About the Authors
Vickie De Beer, Food Editor, has been a creative force in the food industry for more than 25 years. She received her professional Chefs Diploma from The Industry of Culinary Arts and worked as a lecturer for many years before moving into styling and food journalism. Vickie has been food editor for many magazines, to mention a few, Rooi Rose, Shape, Baba and Kleuter and currently, Lose it! and also worked closely with Discovery and Bestmed (two of South Africa’s largest medical aid companies) on nutritional cooking features. Vickie has won numerous food writing and styling awards including Galliova Food Writer Award of the Year (three times) and a PICA (Best Stylist).
Kath Megaw, Nutritionist, has been in child nutrition for 23 years. She is South Africa’s
leading paediatric dietician and holds four medical qualifications including apaediatric dietetic qualification from the prestigious Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA.
She has been published in the Epilepsia journal on the use of the paediatric ketogenic diet in third-world settings and frequently speaks to groups of both professionals and parents on infant and childhood nutrition.
Professor David Segal, Doctor, A paediatric endocrinologist, specializing in the function of the glands and hormones.
Prof Segal studied medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. Some time was
spent in the UK before starting a residency at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, in
Cleveland Ohio. After this, he completed a Fellowship in Paediatric Endocrinology at
