Mams Researchers’ Vulture Conservation Efforts Take Flight
World Wildlife Day: On World Wildlife Day (March 3), we celebrate the remarkable work of Sarah Chabangu, a Mamelodi-born researcher whose passion for conservation is giving vultures a second chance. From rescuing an injured bird in her mother’s garden to leading the Pretoria Zoo’s Bird Department, Chabangu has become a driving force in vulture conservation.
Through the zoo’s groundbreaking vulture breeding programme, she helps raise endangered Cape vulture chicks before releasing them into the wild in collaboration with Vulpro. This initiative—the only one in Africa solely dedicated to Cape vultures—is ensuring these majestic birds continue to soar.
Read more about Chabangu’s inspiring journey and how her work is making a difference.
