Free WI-FI zones across Tshwane
The City of Tshwane provides a public Wi-Fi service with a new approach across its seven regions for schools, clinics, informal settlements, libraries and educational institutions. Ulwembu Business Services has been appointed as the service partner in delivering the TshWi-Fi service with a clear mandate of maintaining and restoring TshWi-Fi to the city’s residents. The City has also put strategies in place to expand the network over the next three years, and is introducing several new skills development features that will be available to Tshwane residents free of charge. Ulwembu Business Service also envisions that Tshwane will have full access to Wi-Fi over the next three years.
The City will offer residents access to more data, doubling the free access data allocation from 500 MB to 1 GB per person per day at speeds of up to 15 Mbps. In addition, residents will have access to a new public Wi-Fi app, which will allocate a local number to users, allowing them to make outbound calls to mobile and landline numbers.
The app will make usage statistics available, grant access to urgent announcements regarding other municipal service offerings from the City, and offer access to new online skills and learning advancement features. This includes a free exam revision program available for Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners through TshWi-Fi called the EduBlush Virtual Academy. EduBlush allows TshWi-Fi users to download digitised versions of previous Department of Education exam papers for exam practice with automatic marking, corrections and score-recording abilities to keep track of progress.
Through the TshWi-Fi app, the City of Tshwane is further providing Tshwane youth with free access to the IBM Digital-Nation Africa (D-NA) programme, allowing local entrepreneurs and communities access to knowledge, skills and tools to innovate, design, develop and launch their own digital solutions.
