The Women’s Premier Division tournament, inaugurated in 2003, witnessed a historic moment two decades later with the emergence of the Bulls Daisies – named after the Barberton Daisy featured in the Blue Bulls crest since 1938 – as South Africa’s first professional women’s rugby team. Boasting 35 members, the Bulls Daisies achieved a perfect season in 2023, securing victory in every game and clinching the Women’s Premier Division title.

Jacaranda FM’s Philicity Reeken, known for her love language of preparing hearty meals from scratch, shares her insights ahead of Valentine’s Day.
While Philicity won’t have a Valentine this year, she fully embraces the spirit of love around this time. When asked about her ideal romantic Valentine’s Day dinner, Philicity reveals her famous Hake and Prawn Skewers with Cucumber and Pineapple Salad.
“When it comes to something like a Valentine’s Day dinner, I wanted to make something different, exciting, and, importantly, something easy that could be made by couples together. This meal is for the new lovers, the tired moms and dads, and the couple who are rediscovering their love for each other,” says Philicity.
With the South African heat in mind, Philicity emphasizes the lightness of her dish, perfectly suited for the climate. She recommends starting a little braai and cooking the skewers over a flame, allowing couples to enjoy the process together.
Philicity’s recipe includes skewers featuring prawns, hake, baby onions, baby tomatoes, and sweet paprika peppers, served alongside a refreshing salad comprising cucumbers, pineapple, mango, sliced mangetout, and sweet paprika peppers. Ingredients:
Skewers:
- 3 prawns per person (with heads attached)
- 1 fillet of hake (approximately 400g) or frozen skinless medallions
- Baby onions
- Baby tomatoes
- Sweet paprika peppers
Salad:
- Cucumbers
- Pineapple
- Mango
- Sliced mangetout
- Sweet paprika peppers
Dressing:
- Lime juice
- Red wine vinegar
- Chopped red chili (deseeded if preferred)
- Oil
Skewer Sauce:
- Oil
- Fish spice
- Prawn spice
- Liquid smoke
Sides:
- Pita bread
- Tzatziki spread
Preparation:
- Chop all the salad ingredients into bite-sized pieces and mix lime juice, chopped chili, red wine vinegar, and oil for the dressing. Refrigerate the dressing.
