At just 25 years old, Zinhle Skosana has carved her place as one of South Africa’s most promising culinary talents. Her journey from peeling potatoes in a modest Mamelodi kitchen to leading operations as a Senior Head Chef is a story of grit, passion, and unshakable determination.
Humble Beginnings
Zinhle’s love for food was born in her mother’s kitchen, where simple chores—chopping onions, tasting broth—became the foundation of a lifelong dream. What started as routine family cooking soon transformed into a calling that would take her from township streets to the refined kitchens of Pretoria East.
Building Her Craft
In 2023, she enrolled at Capsicum Culinary Studio, South Africa’s premier culinary institution. By July 2024, she graduated as a professional chef, describing the moment as both empowering and emotional. Yet, she insists her greatest lessons came not from textbooks but from the “kitchen trenches,” where long hours and relentless pressure tested her resolve.
Her industry placement at Summit Grill and Skybar pushed her beyond her comfort zone. Time management, teamwork, and organisation became survival skills. “There were moments of doubt, raw emotions, and tough days,” she recalls. “But each challenge built my confidence and strength. I earned it, one hard day at a time.”
Rising to Leadership
Her dedication paid off. Immediately hired after her placement, Zinhle now leads as a Senior Head Chef—training students, managing operations, and ensuring excellence in every dish. For her, it’s a full-circle moment: “Now, I’m the one guiding students who were once like me. It’s something I’ll always be grateful for.”
Life Beyond the Kitchen
Despite her demanding schedule, Zinhle maintains balance through discipline. Mornings begin with stretching and a healthy breakfast, afternoons are reserved for lighter tasks, and evenings are dedicated to family, hobbies, and private catering gigs under her brand, iChefYENU.
Her greatest passion lies in sauce-making, which she believes can elevate any dish from ordinary to unforgettable. Her fridge staples—eggs, onions, garlic, cheese, butter, and milk—are the building blocks of her creativity. And her go-to tool? A simple spatula: “It’s always in control, just like me.”
Looking Ahead
Though she once dreamed of taking her skills abroad, Zinhle now proves daily that excellence knows no borders. With her sights set on expanding her brand locally and internationally, she sees herself as only at the beginning of a long, impactful career.
