City of Tshwane Firefighters Contain Multiple-Shack Fire in Salvokop
The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department swiftly responded to a fire that engulfed multiple shacks on 5th Avenue in Salvokop, Pretoria, on the morning of Monday, 10 March 2025.
The fire was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre at 11:02, prompting the immediate dispatch of firefighting teams from Central, Erasmuskloof, and Hatfield Fire Stations. Resources deployed included two fire trucks, a water tanker, a video unit, and a district commander’s unit.
Firefighters managed to contain the rapidly spreading flames, preventing further damage to surrounding homes and structures. However, eight shacks were destroyed, affecting approximately 13 residents. The fire was fully extinguished by 13:11.
In response, Tshwane Emergency Services’ Disaster Risk Management officials, in collaboration with various departments, NGOs, and private entities, provided assistance to those impacted. Emergency relief, including food, clothing, and alternative shelter, was offered to affected individuals.
Gauteng Emergency Medical Services and the South African Police Service were also on the scene to assist with incident management. One person sustained a minor burn injury to the hand and was treated on-site.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

- Properly extinguish fires – Use sand or a fire extinguisher for paraffin fires.
