Father-Son Duo Cantrel Releases Inspirational Two-Track EP “Something in the Orange
South African music enthusiasts are in for a treat as the father-and-son duo Cantrel, composed of Neil and Jesse Breytenbach, unveil their latest musical project, the two-track EP titled Something in the Orange. This new release marks a significant moment for the pair, who hope their music serves as a wellspring of inspiration.
The EP features a radio edit and an acoustic rendition of the track originally penned by American country artist Zach Bryan. Cantrel’s reinterpretation transforms the song into a captivating adult contemporary ballad, showcasing Jesse’s rock-infused vocal prowess.
Neil Breytenbach, a seasoned keyboardist for the local band Prime Circle and a prolific songwriter, brings his extensive experience to the project. He also holds the title of ambassador for Princess Charlene of Monaco. His son, Jesse, started exploring music with his father during the COVID-19 lockdown, a period that proved transformative for the duo. Jesse, who began playing guitar at the tender age of 8, and Neil, who started with the keyboard around the same time, bonded over their shared musical passion during this period.
The inception of Cantrel came during these jam sessions, setting the stage for their musical journey. Their father-son dynamic, combined with a mutual love for 1990s grunge bands like Nirvana and Linkin Park, adds a unique flavor to their music. The duo’s recent tour, including performances in Salzburg and Vienna, highlights their growing presence on the international music scene.
Neil and Jesse’s collaborative effort has produced a diverse array of songs. Neil particularly cherishes performing the rock track “Jump,” while the poignant “Final Hour,” written for Neil’s late mother, holds deep personal significance. Tracks like “Chains” and “Runaway” offer solace to those grappling with abusive relationships.
Cantrel’s Something in the Orange is available on all major digital platforms, ready for listeners to experience the heartfelt and dynamic artistry of this exceptional father-son duo.
