Photography hot-spots in Pretoria:
Rosemary Hill
Rosemary Hill, situated east of Pretoria, has become the preferred photo shoot location in Gauteng. Landscapes include diverse wooded areas, a beautiful maze (formal garden), green house (covered in shade cloth), grasslands, rosemary fields, dams, bridges, forests and lanes with single tracks. The ruins of the abandoned buildings as well as a roofless stone cottage, is perfect for interesting and unique shoots.
The Union Buildings
The Union Buildings forms the Official seat of South African Government and houses the Presidency as well as Department of Foreign Affairs. It was build between 1909 and 1913,Originally build to house the entire Public service for the Union of South Africa,It was then the largest building in the country. Many tourists visit this place everyday. Surrounded by beautiful gardens it’s a quite peaceful place and the view of Pretoria from the Union building is quite awesome.
Irene Farm
Situated in the most natural part of the Pretoria city, Irene farm provides big trees, a river, animal life and than incredible country feeling.
Please note that entrance amount is a donation which we then pass on to Irene Homes (a care facility for the mentally disabled in Irene Village) to assist in giving a better life for their residents, this however needs to be pre-arranged with Irene Estate (the owners of the farm)
Irene Jan Smuts House Museum
The museum is situated just around the corner of Irene Farm. With a railway, a forest effect and a beautiful long street, makes this perfect for maternity, family, friendship and couple shoots.The Arboretum, (near the Place of Quiet), is a project of the Friends of the General Smuts Foundation. A variety of indigenous trees and shrubs are being planted to attract birds and butterflies to the area. When Smuts moved to Doornkloof he planted exotic trees such as blue gums and pine trees to assist the mines, and augment his income. The Australian wattles were planted by Ouma Smuts, who liked the yellow flowers.
Today these exotic trees, which are classified as invasive plants are slowly being removed and replaced with indigenous trees. The natural grasslands have recovered over time and the wild flower display in Spring is worth the walk.
Rooihuiskraal Resort/Nature Reserve
Rooihuiskraal Historical Terrain and Animal Farm Rooihuiskraalweg, Rooihuiskraal Declared a national monument in 1981, the original farmstead dates back to the 1880s. It was the location of two battles during the Anglo-Boer war. Facilities include an animal farm, children’s playground, picnic area with braai facilities, two barns, lapa for private functions and a restaurant.
The Sammy Marks Museum
The Sammy Marks Museum is a Victorian mansion called Zwartkoppies Hall, situated about 23km outside Pretoria. The estate originally belonged to 19th century agricultural, industrial and mining tycoon Sammy Marks, who lived there with his wife, Bertha, and nine children. At the 48-room mansion, with its lush gardens and tennis courts, 30 guests could easily be entertained at a time and the huge, 10-plate stove and five ovens bear testimony to this.
Rietvlei Nature Reserve
Situated 18km from the centre of Tshwane, the 3 800-hectare Rietvlei Nature Reserve surrounds the magnificent Rietvlei Dam which supplies Tshwane with 15% of its water. The reserve comprises endangered Bankenveld grassland and is home to approximately 2 000 animals ranging from cheetah, leopard, buffalo, white rhino and a host of buck. The bird watching is remarkable with two dams on the reserve with bird hides which provide open water and wetland habitats.
Pretville
Pretville, {aka, FUNville} is exactly as the name sugst, FUN! It was created specifically for the Afrikaans film, Pretville. With all the fun colours of the 50’s styled theme, you will definitely enjoy your couple session here. Pretville is a Afrikaans musical film from Hartiwood Films. Reuniting the talented filmmaking team behind the 2010 blockbuster Liefling, Die Movie – producers Paul Kruger and Emma Kruger, and co-producer and director Linda Korsten – the film is a rollicking Afrikaans musical set in the 50s. In the small, bright and vibrant town of Pretville, anything is possible and lots of interesting things happen all the time.
SAAF Museum
Put your air-hostess outfit on or get stylish with a pair of boots. The SAAF Museum will also work perfectly if you like a travel themed shoot. The South African Air Force Museum houses, exhibits and restores material related to the history of the South African Air Force. The Museum is divided into three locations, AFB Swartkop outside Pretoria, AFB Ysterplaat in Cape Town and at the Port Elizabeth airport.
Pretoria Zoo
The Pretoria Zoo has plenty undiscovered places to photograph, from stables to a cable car up high. You can even make a wish at the big fountain! The National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria / Tshwane is the largest zoo in the South Africa, and the only one with national status.
Kerkplein
Enjoy the history of our country and visit old President, Paul Kruger and all the old buildings at Kerkplein. Be sure to take some birdseed or breadcrumbs along to spoil the hundreds of doves that make this their home.

Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve
Nestled in the foothills of the Moreleta Kloof lies one of Pretoria’s most exquisite gems, the Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve. The approximate 100 ha reserve is home to various small game species including Springbuck, Zebra, Blesbok, Impala, Duiker, Bushbuck and Ostrich. Birdwatchers can enjoy the abundant birdlife. Flowing through the reserve is a tributary of the perennial Moreleta Spruit, which has its origins at Wingate Park Country Club.
Jan Cilliers Park
Magnolia Dell Park
One of the most beautiful and popular parks in Pretoria. Spread a picnic blanket under the beautiful willows trees next to a stream or pop into the tea garden and restaurant for refreshments and light meals.
This green lung which belonged to the municipality was originally a soil dumping site for road works around the Pretoria area during the early 1940’s when Koningin Wilhelmina road was connected with University road. 250 Magnolia trees were planted during this time all over the soil site during late 1940’s by the municipality. A Struggle occurred among the municipality and developers when the developers wanted to use the site for residential housing.
