A young learner from PTA shows Artistic Prowess
A young learner from Pretoria East secures a substantial sum of R20,000 for his school and R5,000 for himself.
His mother describes his achievement as “something special,” and both the principal and the Waterkloof Primary School community express immense pride.
Karabo de Villiers, aged 9, earned R25,000 by emerging victorious in a drawing competition. Supplied with the winnings, he plans to invest R20,000 into Waterkloof Primary School in Pretoria East, with the remainder satisfying his desires. Last year, Karabo clinched the top spot in the Edgars community art competition, hosted by Menlyn Shopping Centre.
According to his mother, Boitumelo de Villiers, Karabo’s victory was confirmed recently when he received the prize. She explained that he entered the competition during a birthday shopping trip to Edgars, where they were approached by a staff member who informed them about the contest. Boitumelo encouraged both her children to participate, and to their delight, Karabo emerged as the winner.
Boitumelo expressed her joy and pride in her son’s achievement, emphasizing its significance both personally and for the school’s finances. She recounted Karabo’s journey into art, which began in Grade 1 with simple sketches and coloring, evolving into a passion for 3D art inspired by his favorite artist, Nash-Vibes.
Karabo himself reflected on his win, expressing excitement about the prospect of advancing to higher levels in future competitions. He also sees his success as a motivation for others to pursue art more seriously.
Boitumelo advocates for the continuation of such competitions by businesses and art spaces, highlighting the positive impact of art on children’s development and its potential to steer them away from excessive screen time.
In her pride and support for her son’s talent, Boitumelo dreams of opening an art studio or classes to nurture children’s creativity and keep them engaged away from digital distractions.
