Job Summary

The Concept Designer is responsible for the conceptual development of engineered solutions and / or opportunities that support both new installations and revamp projects. The skill set requires a broad understanding of project engineering, draughting and how our machines selection can be utilised, adapted or applied to create order intake. This responsibility including the transfer of technical knowledge from technical sales and proposals into contract execution as prescribed in the phase model.

Scope of Work

The successful candidate will be required to fulfil the job as summarised above and detailed below, but not limited to:

Office position however when required needs to work remotely from home.
Needs to be a team player whom can work independently, whilst inter-depending on the support from within TKIS.
Technical liaison between TKIS-(SA) and TKIS Mining Systems (Essen) and Material Handling (Rohrbach);
Shared technical resource between TKIS-(SA) business lines typically services, new build and revamp;
Shared technical resource between TKIS-(SA) all departments and or functions typically, proposals, drawing office, engineering and project execution;
Develop the opportunity and concept as per the phase model mandatory stage gates (S1, S2, S3 & S4) and governance milestones (E1 & E2).
Core member of the Business Development Team responsible for the conceptual development of plant, conveyor and stockyards complete with the selection of equipment and machines for tender submission through to final contract handing over. This knowledge will be applied to new and revamp installations within the mining and material handling business lines.
Technical support will typically include:
Creating the project description of works;
Creating the bases of design;
Performing basic engineering calculations;
Creating technical descriptions and methodologies as required;
Man-hour estimation (I.e. Drawing office, Project, Engineering and Site management in liaison with the department);
Select, Optimise and or adapt machines to the application;
Create and optimise layout including machine selection;
Creating conceptual drawings (I.e. Set-out, material flow diagrams and general arrangements);
Create work breakdown structures for machines complete with detailed BoQ to facilitate accurate costing;
Research and retrieve technical information and drawings as when and or where required;
Providing technical support wrt client returnable schedule.
Read and understand the client user requirement and specification:
Process requirement;
Plant layout and system interfaces;
Multi disciple requirements (I.e. Mechanical, Structural, Civil, Electrical, Control & Instrumentation);
Identifying battery limits and interfaces;
Clients specific equipment requirement;
Client specific machine requirement.
Responsible for tender innovation and opportunity development:
Needs to lead the innovation session and convert the opportunity into an engineered solution;
Needs to be able to communicate within the bid team and between supporting engineering disciplines;
Optimise and refine the user process requirement;
Optimising equipment and component selection;
Optimising thyssenkrupp offering and value add;
Assess and reducing financial and technical risk;
Present innovative solutions that can be considered;
Participate in developing an agile pricing strategy.
Technical support for the Price Fix:
Prepare and present the engineered solution at the Price fix;
Defend the man-hour estimate, machine selection and work breakdown structure at the Price fix.
Co-ordinate the drawing office function for proposals:
Management of the drafting function as maybe required;
Assign and manage drawing office tasks as maybe required.
Technical support to service and revamp business:
Liaise with client’s so as to interpret root cause of problems experienced by client and to recommend cause of action so as to repair, improve/optimize existing equipment;
Liaise with revamp manager so as to recommend methods of repair, improvement and optimize the design of existing equipment;
Liaise with engineering so as to improve/optimize technical design changes to existing equipment;
Co-ordinate the drawing office function to insure design recommendations are correctly interpreted, drawn and checked.

Desired Experience & Qualification
Qualification

National Technical Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Minimum).
Experience is essential.

Additional Educational Requirements

Draughtsman apprenticeship (Traditional)
Industry Track Record:

Conceptual design of Materials Handling and Mining Systems;
Product knowledge of Thyssenkrupp and its competitor’s machines.

Years of Experience

A combination of:

Minimum 15 years’ Draughting experience in a comparable industry;
Minimum 10 years’ Draughting – Machine design in a similar industry;
Minimum 10 years’ Concept Designer in a similar industry;
Minimum 3 years’ Proposal and Estimating in a similar industry.
