Bibi: Cher and Bonnie Tyler Tribute
The guests are welcomed in the courtyard with a chilled beverage and freshly popped popcorn.
Wilha Carstens (contestant in the TV reality show “Die Kontrak”) is the host today and handles all the introductions and formalities.
Bibi du Preez is a phenomenal mixture of voice and stage persona. The huge Cher hit “Believe” was the first song she apparently performed in front of an audience, at the tender age of only 8 years old. She does more than justice to the music of Cher as well as Bonnie Tyler and the crowd (consisting of lots of friends and family) loudly express their appreciation of her performance. Her self-deprecating humor only endears her more to her audience.
The choice of songs is a delightful walk-down- the- best- of- the- 80’s memory lane: “Have you ever seen the rain”, “Lost in France”, “Walking in Memphis”, “Jesse James” and “Heartache”. She calls Wilha back to the stage to join her in singing “Total Eclipse” and “I found someone”. They share a wonderful synergy on stage and the audience loves them! You may recognize Bibi as Martha – at the highly successful “Afrikaans is Groot” shows – a ‘sout van die aarde’ person, in Bibi’s own words. She shares that she also has a few other personas including Rentia and Lucretia. All very colorful in their own way.
Just before belting out “Holding out for a hero”, Bibi removes her earrings with the introduction “Want ek warm nou eers op”! Sporting a sailor’s cap (al-la-Cher) Bibi intends to end the evening with “Turn back time”, but the audience just won’t let her go. She obliges by singing “Always Remember Us This Way” (from “A star is born” movie) and “Crazy” from Patsy Kline.
