Young Talent Shines in Classical Music
At just 17 years old, Jayden Sauer is setting the classical music world ablaze, blending talent and determination to make his mark as a rising star in the field.
Hailing from Elarduspark in Pretoria, Sauer is completing his matric at Hoërskool Waterkloof while simultaneously making waves in South Africa’s music scene. His recent selection for the prestigious Simfonia Juventi Youth Symphony Orchestra, a group of 79 gifted young musicians from across the country, is a testament to his exceptional skill and dedication. Admission to the orchestra is no small feat, with rigorous criteria that include advanced musical knowledge, technical proficiency, and mastery of a symphonic instrument.
A Musical Journey Begins
Sauer’s musical path started early, influenced by a family deeply rooted in music. “My grandmother played the violin and piano, and my grandfather’s family all played various instruments,” he shared. “Some performed in bands, while others simply loved making music.”
Despite this rich musical heritage, Sauer didn’t initially view music as a serious pursuit. “I took piano lessons in Grade 2 mostly because my mom played,” he admitted. “But it wasn’t until high school that I discovered my true passion.” That passion was sparked by the alto saxophone, which he began playing in Grade 8, followed by the clarinet in Grade 10. Sauer’s dedication paid off when he achieved his Grade 8 certification from the Trinity School of Music for both instruments.
Finding His Voice Through Music
Jazz music, in particular, captured Sauer’s heart. “My love for jazz grew uncontrollably,” he said. “It’s now an integral part of my life.” His choice of the saxophone stemmed from his desire to play what he considered the “coolest” instrument. “The saxophone’s versatility draws me to it like a magnet,” he explained. “I love it even more now than when I first started.”
Beyond the saxophone, Sauer’s musical repertoire includes the piano, and he is currently exploring the bass guitar and acoustic guitar.
Balancing Ambitions
As both a musician and a student, Sauer faces the challenge of balancing his academic responsibilities with his artistic pursuits. “Time management is crucial,” he said. “Both music and academics demand immense time and energy, but achieving balance leads to a well-rounded life.”
Performing with an orchestra, however, brings its own set of challenges and rewards. “The pressure of performing for an audience is immense,” he acknowledged. “In the performing arts, anything less than perfection isn’t enough. You have to give 100% every time you pick up your instrument.” Yet, the joy of expressing himself through music makes it all worthwhile. “If a musician doesn’t enjoy their performance, the audience will sense it and won’t enjoy it either,” he noted.
Creating Unforgettable Moments
Reflecting on his journey, Sauer highlighted memorable experiences such as winning awards and being selected for elite orchestras. But for him, the connections he’s made stand out the most. “The camaraderie with my fellow orchestra members and coaches is what truly creates unforgettable moments,” he said. “They accept me for who I am and allow me to be myself.”
A Dream for the Future
Looking ahead, Sauer’s dream is to inspire others through his music. “I want to play with confidence and touch people’s lives through my performances,” he said. Despite his accomplishments, he remains grounded. “My talent is a gift from God, and I’m blessed to have it.”
With his remarkable talent, unyielding determination, and the support of those around him, Jayden Sauer is poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of classical music.
