Jacaranda Agricultural Show offers an agricultural feast
The Jacaranda Agricultural Show
The Jacaranda Agricultural Show, which will be held at the Tshwane Events Centre from 24 to 28 August 2016, will offer a feast of agriculture, wildlife farming, agricultural machinery, livestock, agricultural business development, technology, organic farming and much more.
Besides a full range of equestrian, cattle, poultry and fancy pigeon events scheduled for this year, the show will also host the Afrikaner Cattle World Expo, a Wildlife Workshop themed Ranching with buck in these modern times, the Capital City Business Chamber and AgriAllAfrica’s ‘Matchmaking Africa’ hall with trade and networking sessions, the AfriFem™ Hall dedicated to ladies and a Youth Show.
Show Manager Petro Ferreira says the show will offer a huge attraction to the general public this year as the event has partnered with Boere in Nood to host a number of concerts in aid of farmers suffering as a result of the ongoing drought. “Our Boere in Nood stage will host the cream of the crop of the South African music industry with names like Kurt Darren, Matthys Roets, Andriette Norman, Rinel Day, Ricus Nel, Heinz Winckler, Arno Jordaan, Jay, Armand Hofmeyr and Dewald Dippenaar already confirmed. We will also host a gospel show on the Sunday featuring artists Danie Botha and Piet Smit. These shows are all included in the entrance fee to the show grounds and we invite the public to bring their chairs and picnic blankets to welcome springtime and enjoy great music in aid of our farmers.”
One of the regular focus areas of the Jacaranda Show is the youth, and this year the event is offering three projects specifically aimed at this group. Firstly, as part of the Interprovincial Youth Show learners compete in 15 categories, including dairy cattle, beef cattle, horses, poultry, rabbits, wool-bearing sheep, meat goats, dairy goats, dairy production, pigs, culinary arts, fancy pigeons and racing pigeons. During this competition the animals are not being judged – only the showmanship and knowledge of the participant.
Secondly, the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) in partnership with the Jacaranda Show is launching the ARC/Agricultural Youth Show School of the Year Award 2016. This award is aimed at schools involved with agriculture and gives learners the opportunity to design a poster illustrating disciplines of animal production.
Thirdly, for the first time at this interprovincial level, Youth Judges’ and Stewards’ courses are being presented this year. These courses are open to everyone interested in becoming involved in the judging of Youth Show competitions.
Emerging farmers will again receive attention this year and the SABC2 actuality programme, Living Land, in partnership with local government, will host a workshop for these farmers. Farmers from four provinces will attend this workshop and enjoy the opportunity to interact with the farming fraternity.
The Jacaranda Show provides a specialised business-to-business platform designed to showcase, discuss and create agricultural business opportunities for farmers and the agricultural industry and is a must for everyone involved in the agricultural industry. “But the event offers much more. There will be something for the whole family, with an amusement park and special play area for children, the AfriFem™ Hall, a beer tent, excellent wines and great food. It is a great day out,” says Ferreira.
Cattle
A total of eight cattle breeds will compete in this year’s show. The beef and dual-purpose breeds taking part in the show are Brahman, Braunvieh, Limousin, Pinzgauer, PinZ²yl, Afrikaners, Simmentaler and Simbra.
The Afrikaner Cattle Association will be hosting their first-ever cattle auction consisting of 75 animals and a number of show animals.
The Interbreed Competition will be held on Saturday, 27 August. Breeders who would like to enter the Interbreed Competition must first enter and win their respective breed classes.
Horses
