South African violinist / violist, Gina Beukes, currently residing in Belgium, returns to her homeland with a highly original programme, featuring favourite works by Chopin, adapted for violin and piano. She will be accompanied by the UK pianist, Helen Leek.
Much of Frederick Chopin’s piano writing features exquisite melodies that can be easily adapted to be performed on the violin. A perfect example is the marvellous Opus posthumous Nocturne in C sharp Minor, which was first performed by the French violinist, Ginette Niveau. This opened up a whole world of Chopin works that were adapted for violin by various composers. Beukes and Leek collected these arrangements and performed them in concert to high acclaim in the UK.
The main work in this programme is the famous Chopin Cello Sonata, performed by GIna on the viola. Much like Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, which is succesfully performed on both viola and cello, the Chopin Sonata lends itself equally well as a viola showpiece.
The remainder of the programme comprises a selection of Nocturnes, Etudes and Waltzes, making for a hugely accessible and enjoyable listening experience, for lovers of Chopin’s music.
