Beethoven & Prokofiev sonatas performed by German violinist
Two of the most popular violin sonatas of all times form part of violinist Alissa Margulis’ upcoming performance with pianist Luis Magalhães on Sunday 2 September at 4pm in the Miriam Makeba Concert Hall at Unisa.
The two sonatas are Beethoven’s popular and passionate Kreutzer sonata and Prokoviev’s lyrical second sonata, originally composed for flute and piano.
The rest of the programme consists of four romantic pieces by Dvořák and the exquisite Poème Élégiaque by the Belgian composer Eugène Ysaÿe
Alissa Margulis was born in Freiburg, Germany, into a family of Russian musicians. At the age of four she started to learn the violin and the piano with Prof. Wolfgang Marschner. She made her first public appearance at the age of seven with the Budapest Soloists. At the age of ten she won the first prize at the Spohr Youth Competition and at the German national competition Jugend Musiziert within the same year.
Three years later she was invited by Zakhar Bron to study in Lübeck and Cologne. In 2005, Alissa Margulis entered Brussels Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth to follow the class of Mr. Augustin Dumay. Alissa currently is a student of Pavel Vernikov and Julian Rachlin.
Born in Portugal and currently residing in Stellenbosch, Luis Magalhães’s career as a pianist displays the cosmopolitanism typical of successful 21st century musicianship.
