Directions to the Sacramento Trail

From Cape Road, turn right in to Target Kloof and continue along this road through the dip and up to Heugh Road, Walmer. Turn right in to Heugh Road & then left in to Victoria Drive. This road travels for some distance until it reaches Marine Drive, which runs parallel to the coastline at Schoenmakerskop. Turn right into the little village of Schoenmakerskop (Schoenies) and continue about 1 kilometre until you reach a fence. Park here and start trail at the open gate.

Description

This is an extremely popular one-way or circular route between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay. The trail traverses the Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve, and offers attractive seascapes, landscapes, seasonal wildflowers, dune vegetation and regular sightings of gannets and dolphins along with the odd whale! Many wrecked ships, one the Portuguese galleon ‘Sacramento’, lie offshore, and a bronze cannon at Schoenmakerskop points towards the wreck site. The route continues past the Sacramento monument towards the far end of a sandy bay, aptly named Cannon Bay where the ruins of a mill that used to crush seashells is located. The full trail leads along the shoreline and returns over the high dunes. However, you can walk as much or as little of the trail as you wish.

Finish off with a well-deserved cup of tea/coffee and a delicious treat at the Sacramento Tea Room!
