Five Shy Meerkat Tours – Oudtshoorn/Addo to Hermanus
We had to get up before sunrise for this tour, so we headed to bed early the night before. It was worth it!
The Meerkat tour is only possible on clear and sunny days, as these adorable animals won’t venture outside during cold or rainy weather.
We met with our guide and some fellow travelers for an early cup of “Boeretroos,” also known as coffee with rusks. We were each handed a camp chair and headed to our viewing site for the morning’s entertainment. A spectacular African sunrise filled the sky as the sun slowly rose over the horizon.
We were left in awe and mesmerised by the landscape, and it was a morning we would never forget.
We saw the meerkats in their natural habitat as they came out of their burrow, looking for the sun to warm them up. Meerkats are diurnal animals, meaning they are active during the day and sleep at night. They typically wake up when the sun rises. This is why we had to leave early to see them.
Did you know? Meerkats are part of a group of animals known as the “Shy 5.” This group also includes the bat-eared fox, the aardvark, the porcupine, and the aardwolf.
We were in for a treat! We didn’t have to wait long for our furry friends to emerge.
The only thing more entertaining was our traditional Afrikaans guide telling us about meerkats in his finest attempt at the Queen’s English. He explained how meerkats forage for food and why they live in groups. The Meerkats were very curious and playful, and they often stood on their hind legs for a better view of their surroundings. We got some amazing close-up photos of them.
We left the meerkat kingdom feeling fascinated and lucky to have seen them in their natural habitat.
